Starting next week on 1st December 2020, you'll be able to purchase Red Dead Online as a standalone product, separate from Red Dead Redemption 2. From then through until 15th February 2021, it'll cost an introductory price of $4.99 on the PlayStation Store before the price is raised to $19.99. The download will eat up 123GB of your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4 hard drive space, with the option to also purchase the game's story mode present should you so wish.
The Rockstar Games blog says: "For the first time, new players who do not already own Red Dead Redemption 2 can experience everything Red Dead Online has to offer, including access to all future content updates." The likes of Specialist Roles, story-based missions, and Showdown Modes make up that particular content offering. The developer makes sure to note that Red Dead Online will be available on PS5 via backwards compatibility — a native version, much like what Grand Theft Auto V is getting, hasn't been announced at the time of writing.
Are you someone who would be interested in playing Red Dead Online but not the story portion of Red Dead Redemption 2? Explain yourself in the comments below.

I honestly couldn’t imagine not wanting the story mode but wanting the half-baked online mode. Perhaps if you’ve already played the story mode on a different platform but are buying on PS4 to play online with friends?
I would prefer playing the story option rather than the online portion actually, but I don't suppose I'll be getting that for five smackeroons.
123gb just for the online? Is that a joke 😂😂
This should have been implemented from the beginning. The only reason I haven't played RDR2 is because of the online trophies! Sad, I know 🤷🏻♂️
Lennnyyyyyyy!
the only part of Rockstar Games I care about is the Single Player the rest never gets used.
PS4 owners: So how about a ps4 RDR 1/Undead Nightmare port?
Rockstar: No, but you can buy RDR 2 Online as standalone!!
Playstation owners: Rockstar what happened to you? You used to be cool!
Rockstar: Have $500 Shark card credits!
@Waa-Laa Is that because of OCD or something?
I hope there's 60 fps patch for the story mode and we can uninstall the multiplayer part on ps5
I bought this at launch but still only played the early snow level before getting distracted by other games.
@Starkei correct.
From the article... "The new standalone version of Red Dead Online will require up to 123GB of disk space and will also include the option to unlock Red Dead Redemption 2: Story Mode (purchased separately)."
Can they patch out the online trophies so I can get the platinum in the part I bought the game for in first place? That would be great!
@Waa-Laa it is annoying but the story is worth playing!
Rockstar have become a real turd of a company. Their single player experiences are amazing but they flat out refuse to offer dlc even though consumers would throw money at it
@MightyDemon82 I understand, I have people at work telling me to at least play on a separate account, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Maybe if the PS5 gets a remaster with the multiplayer stripped I may play it.
Please people. Do. Not. Buy this. Se d a message to rockstar that this is not what people want or expect from them.
All they seem to care about is online these days. What a very real shame. Best developer out there in the ps2 era, and among the best on ps3
New bounty hunter expansion and a new 100 rank outlaw pass next week too. Nice.
@Boucho11 they are not only a turd but the most greediest company known to man! You would be crazy to pay for a microtransactions infested waste of space @$20!!!!
I remember being so hyped and optimistic towards Red Dead Online, after playing a few hours I was so burnt out didn’t even go back to finish the story after Arthur.
Small price, massive hit on the ps5's storage... no thanks.
Is red dead online even out of beta? Has it had anything besides that one update like last October?
Is this mode at all popular still? Obviously no where close to what GTA has but is it still decently popular, just curious?
I own this on Xbox. Was going to get it for 28$ on sale for the online only. Nice to see it’ll be 5$ in a few days.
@redd214 I log in every single day and the servers are are nearly always full (30 players) apart from a few months back where the servers only had around 5 players in for a time. Dunno if this was done intentional or a bug but it made the rare legendary animals appear a lot more often. It was great!
@ApostateMage still happy about this update after what they done with daily challengers and silly price some of stuff is now. I had my streak at 78 days but not played it at all since they stopped that.
pretty clear what their plan was for this, Introduce the new standalone Online only version priced at $5 to entice new players with some new content locked be hind gold bars. Then also reduce every method of making gold in the game so much to make it as difficult as possible so that that they can't afford any of the additional content to effectively force them into buying gold bars by locking things behind gold bars.
@InvaderJim Yeah, the daily streak reset is harsh, I was on 128. I'm not particularly fussed about the gold because I'm a daily player and I have a lot of it but it is a horse kick in the teeth for anybody relatively new. Honestly, I can see why a lot are turning away from the game but I play it mainly to just chill out in its beautiful world so I'm staying.
